Fabrication and Characterization of Composites Based on Glycidyl Methacrylate-grafted Butyl Rubber and Amine-functionalized Carbon Nanotubes

Butyl rubber (IIR), a copolymer of isobutylene with a small amount of isoprene, is widely used in tires, adhesives, and electronics due to its excellent gas barrier and vibration-damping properties. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added as reinforcing nanofillers to enhance the thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of the rubber compounds. To achieve better filler dispersion and interfacial adhesion, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-grafted IIR was prepared via reactive melt-mixing of IIR in the presence of GMA, and amine-functionalized CNTs (a-CNTs) were synthesized. The chemical reactions and molecular interactions of the GMA-grafted IIR/a-CNT composites were analyzed using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. The microstructural features and rheological behavior of the rubber composites were characterized using SEM and rotational rheometry, respectively. The tensile mechanical properties and damping characteristics of the rubber composites were evaluated using a universal tensile machine and DMA.
