Urushiol, a natural phenolic compound with a catechol structure and a long carbon chain, exhibits unique curing properties and excellent physical and chemical properties. Lignin, an abundant biomass resource with a benzene ring structure, presents the possibility of developing various functional materials. In this study, we investigated the cross-linking mechanism and curing behavior of urushiol/lignin blend coatings depending on the component content. To elucidate the molecular-level mechanisms responsible for the curing process, the blend coatings were characterized using UV-Vis, FTIR, DSC, XPS, and contact angle measurements. Thermal stability, surface properties, and mechanical properties were also evaluated. In particular, the addition of lignin accelerated the curing process and improved the thermal stability of the mixed coating. These findings highlight the potential of urushiol/lignin mixtures as sustainable and advanced coating materials for various applications.
