Synthesis and Properties of High-Heat-Resistant Liquid Crystalline Vitrimers Based on Bismaleimide

Bismaleimide (BMI) resins, characterized primarily by excellent thermal stability, also possess various advantages like mechanical strength and chemical resistance. These properties make them highly functional thermosetting resins used in ultra-high-temperature fields like aerospace. This study aims to develop ultra-heat-resistant vitrimers by adopting bismaleimides as functional groups for polymerization. We introduced mesogenic structures and dynamic covalent bonds to design and synthesize liquid crystalline monomers forming covalent adaptable networks (CANs) upon curing. The molecular structures of the synthesized monomers were confirmed using NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the cured resins were investigated using TGA, DSC, and DMA. To verify reprocessability, we examined stress-relaxation results with the Arrhenius equation and analyzed reprocessed specimens after heat-pression reprocessing, comparing them with pristine samples.
