Organic compounds are promising as battery materials due to their sustainability, customizable structures, and low cost. However, they provide lower working voltages than inorganic materials. To overcome this, we developed a method to enhance the discharge voltage by using electron-rich heterocyclic compounds as cathode material employing nitrogen as the redox center. The planar ring structure of carbazole derivatives aids in better charge distribution and delocalization, achieving a high discharge voltage of 3.7-4.3 V vs Li/Li+. An optimized structural design allows for multielectron redox reactions, enhancing the capacity to approximately 100 mAh/g. Adding phenyl substituents to the nitrogen redox center enhances π-electron conjugation, improves interaction with the [PF6-] anion, and shields the active site from direct electrolyte contact. This comprehensive approach increases discharge voltage, capacity, and stability of the cathode material, leading to better performance.
