A new Viologen-based mesogen (VM) is synthesized for the fabrication of electrochromic (EC) smart windows that offer polarization-dependent color adjustment and transparency. By manipulating electric fields, the color of VRM can be intentionally tuned by transitioning between its dication (D state), cation-radical (C state), and neutral state (N state). Utilizing a comprehensive understanding of VM phase transitions, researchers have successfully developed a macroscopic, uniaxially oriented VM hierarchical nanostructure using simple coating and self-assembly techniques. Subsequent photopolymerization significantly improves the thermal, mechanical, and chemical stability of the VM thin film. In addition to color management, the transmittance of these uniaxially oriented VM-based EC smart windows can be precisely adjusted by rotating a linear polarizer.
