An efficient coupling reaction is essential for successful polymerization to produce well-defined and high-molecular weight polymers. Among various organic reactions, click chemistry enabled complete conversion along with unique orthogonal reactivity toward various functional groups. By applying this powerful tool, we constructed successful poly(N-sulfonylamindines) poly(N-sulfonylimidates) and various kind of graft and dendronized polymers. As a second generation of click chemistry, Sulfur-(VI) Fluoride Exchange (SuFEx) provides stable polysulfates and polysulfonates with great ease and reliability via step-growth design. We further developed this efficient chemistry to more advanced version by introducing a selective initiator and deactivated monomers to give ‘chain-growth SuFEx polycondensation’. Overcoming intrinsic drawbacks of the general step-growth polymerization, this chain-growth design offered well-controlled molecular weight and narrow dispersity.
