Single-Layered Optical Thin Film with Biaxial Anisotropic Absorption for Polarization-Dependent Multichromism

To demonstrate multichromism by biaxial anisotropic absorption, a single-layered optical thin film (SOF) was newly developed. The SOF was prepared through a sequential process of self-coating, self-assembly, and topochemical polymerization of host-guest chromophores. Charge-transfer interactions and subsequent topochemical polymerization determined the molecular arrangement within the SOF. The long axes of the aromatic stacking structures aligned perpendicular to the shear direction, whereas the conjugated polydiacetylene formed along the shear direction. This induced orthogonal absorption axes for two different wavelengths. As a result, the SOF can selectively absorb incident light according to the polarization angle, leading to multichromism. This SOF provides a new strategy for various applications, such as anti-counterfeiting and information encryption systems.
