Organic solar cells (OSCs) are promising technology for harnessing solar energy due to their unique advantages, such as flexibility, semitransparency, and solution-processability. Recent advances in nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs), which better utilize long-wavelength light and reduce unfavorable interfacial electron coupling, have significantly improved the power conversion efficiency of OSCs. Among NFAs, the outstanding performance of the Y-series acceptor, having low energy loss and high fill factor, has been found to originate not only from electronic structures but also from morphologies concerning molecular ordering, phase separation, and mixing. The side-chain engineering of the Y-series acceptor is an efficient strategy for retaining the physical properties while allowing the manipulation of the solubility, crystallization, intermolecular packing, and orientation of the Y-series. This presentation will showcase recent results for improving performance, reproducibility, and thermal stability of OSC devices through this strategy.
