Efficient and rapid decontamination of radioactive elements is important to prevent further exposure to radiation. In this work, a strippable catechol-terminated polyurethane coating is developed to remove the radioactive elements from surfaces. Solution of polyurethane with zeolite was rapidly applied to the contaminated surfaces by simple spraying, followed by fast drying in ambient air. Polyurethane coating was easily peeled off from the surfaces with a reasonable toughness. The removal efficiencies of 137Cs at various substrates (e.g., stainless steel, porous cement) and wide temperature (-10 ~ 30 ℃), was higher than those of commercialized coating (e.g., Decongel) due to the synergistic effect of the zeolite having an excellent Cs distribution coefficient and catechol metal coordination. Moreover, the volume of radioactive waste generated after the surface decontamination could be reduced by a simple degradation, which can reduce disposal cost and prevent secondary contamination.
