Polyacrylic acid (PAA), which has a very high molecular weight, is widely used as a thickening agent in cosmetics and various other products. To effectively use PAA as a coating material, it is necessary to prepare a relatively high-concentration solution with the relatively low molecular weight. To reduce the molecular weigh, the solid PAA powders were exposed to various types of radiation sources, such as e-beams and gamma rays. In addition, to improve the moisture resistance of PAA as a coating material, various types of isocyanate-based and epoxy-based crosslinking agents were mixed at various addition ratios, dried, and then the samples were prepared. The properties of the prepared samples were evaluated using FT-IR, thermal analysis, and dynamic vapor sorption. In conclusion, the moisture absorption of PAA after cross-linking with the irradiated PAA solution was less than 15%. This study provides an effective solution preparation method as coating materials.
