Utilisation of an eco-friendly water-in-water emulsion formulation for UV protection

Recent evidence of the hazardous effects of sunscreens on coral reefs has raised the need to develop sunscreens composed of environmentally friendly ingredients. Accordingly, water-in-water emulsions composed entirely of water with the addition of the water-soluble sunscreen, Ensulizole, were introduced as a novel template to develop multifunctional cosmetic formulations that can perform both skin protection and UV protection functions. Specifically, we focused on increasing the stability of water-in-water emulsions containing low- toxic and biocompatible polymers (PVA, dextran, alginate, sodium caseinate, etc.) and inorganic nanoparticles (TiO2, silica) to contribute to synergistic UV protection while minimizing the content of organic chemicals and elements that have a negative impact on the ocean.
