Carbon fiber composites has been widely adopted in various fields such as aerospace, vehicle, and civil infrastructures. In specific, continuous-carbon fiber reinforced plastics has been used due to its superior mechanical properties compared to steels. With increasing demand of the composites, the needs for the corresponding structural safety have been spotlighted. Because of its application, the structural safety is directly related to the safety and the cost. Thus, structural health monitoring (SHM) of the carbon fiber composites is an uprising topic in various applications. Therefore, the SHM of carbon fiber composites was investigated in this study. Especially, the electrical resistance of the composites was utilized to analyze the structural status of the composites in real-time. When mechanical deformation was applied, electrical resistance was changed. Thus, condition-based real-time SHM technique of the carbon fiber composites was successfully developed in this study.
