Phenylethynyl-terminated imide oligomers (PETI) are currently regarded as state-of-the-art high-performance resins for aerospace applications. The processing of these resins is facilitated by their low molecular weight, yet they cure to form a robust, solvent-resistant material. Despite this, the final cured structure has remained an enigma. Therefore, the present study was undertaken with three primary objectives. Firstly, the elucidation of the final structure of the cross-linked polymer is of paramount importance. Secondly, understanding the cross-linking mechanism and the factors that govern it is also of significant interest. Lastly, the study aims to correlate the final structure of the cross-linked polymers with their mechanical and thermal properties, thereby establishing the structure-processing-properties relationships for PETI resins.
