In this study, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) grafted with functional polymers such as water soluble and chiral polymers were prepared via oxygen-mediated surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (O2-SI-RAFT polymerization) under ambient conditions. The polymer-coated MNPs could be easily separated using a magnet and were fully characterized by various tools, including spectroscopic analyses, magnetic hysteresis, TEM, and EDS mapping. The chiral polymer MNPs were confirmed by CD spectroscopy. Also, this is the first report on grafting-from polymerization of chiral polymer brushes onto MNPs.
