Enabling Efficient and Stable Water Electrolysis via Controlling Wetting Properties with Polymers

One unique feature of water electrolysis is the formation of a dynamic interface between solid, liquid, and gas phases. The generation of such an interface has a detrimental effect on the efficiency and stability of water electrolyzers by reducing the active surface area, suppressing efficient mass transport, shifting reaction thermodynamics, and repeatedly exerting mechanical stress. Consequently, the efficiency and stability of water electrolysis significantly depend on effective gas management in addition to the design of suitable electrocatalysts. This presentation will introduce promising results from recent studies on enhancing water electrolysis by engineering electrode wettability. Additionally, I will share our latest progress on controlling the wettability of various components of water electrolyzers using polymeric materials for efficient and durable water electrolysis.
