In organic electronics, a planar molecular structure and the resulting strong aggregation behavior are considered advantageous for charge transport and device performance. However, excessive planarity can sometimes cause issues such as low solubility and poor mechanical properties in thin films. In this presentation, to balance these characteristics, we present a design strategy and synthesis of novel conjugated copolymers where planarity is carefully controlled. By introducing a third component that induces steric hindrance with adjacent conjugated main chain, we optimize the planarity and aggregation behavior of polymers, leading to enhanced solubility, a well-intermixed morphology, and superior mechanical properties of thin films, while preserving charge transport characteristics. As a result, organic solar cells utilizing these polymers demonstrate high power conversion efficiencies.
