Polymer binders are essential for enhancing the strength and flexibility of coatings while ensuring robust adhesion to diverse substrates. When these binders possess stimuli-responsive properties, such as damage-detection and self-healing, they can significantly extend the service life of materials, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Furthermore, on-demand degradation capabilities facilitate easier recycling and disposal. In this context, we explore various approaches to integrate stimuli-responsive functions into polymeric binders, highlighting their potential to improve materials durability, functionality, and sustainability. We design novel force- and photo-sensitive molecules and systematically investigate their capabilities for damage-reporting, self-healing, and recyclability. Our findings demonstrate the potential of these smart materials to revolutionize polymeric binder technologies across various applications, including composites and coating.
