Fabrication of MOF-PLA composite for optical sensing formaldehyde

Formaldehyde (FA) is one of the compounds that significantly impact sick-building syndrome and is known to cause dermatitis, asthma, and cancer with prolonged exposure. FA-detecting sensors are becoming increasingly important, but current sensors on the market have low accessibility due to their high cost and difficulty of use, considering they are for short-term use. In this study, we report a one-time FA sensor tape capable of optical sensing by embedding metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have good sensing sensitivity due to their large surface area, in polylactic acid (PLA) film. Ln-doped/bared MOFs such as Ag-BTC and UiO-66-NH2 were tried to confirm the feasibility of sensing formaldehyde in an eco-friendly PLA film.
