Palm-based polymers are versatile polymers that can be tailored to suit natural rubber applications towards producing green rubber products. Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) has invented a series of novel biocompatible polymeric surfactants that were synthesized in-house by copolymerization of palm oil with fully bio-sourced and renewable starting materials. These surfactants have been explored to replace ammonia latex preservative systems and we have successfully produced ammonia-free field latex, ammonia-free latex concentrates, and low ammonia latex concentrates. These green latex concentrates were further evaluated for dipped film applications. Besides, the surfactants were also being evaluated to discover their potential as latex additives to improve latex film formation and its properties. In line with the trend of green chemistry, our group has also innovated the use of palm-based polymers as green processing aids to address the concerns about the carcinogenicity effect generated from some commonly used rubber process oils derived from petroleum crude oil. These novel surfactants were used to produce environmentally friendly masterbatches which are free of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Three types of, namely dry, wet and oil-extender masterbatches were successfully prepared in the presence of these novel and non-toxic palm-based plasticizers. Since these palm-based surfactants can be synthetically designed, all results have provided a useful reference to the follow-up study to alter their polymeric structures to enhance their properties in producing greener natural rubber and latex products.
