Phosphine oxide-based passivator for defect passivation in metal halide perovskites

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as a promising material for next-generation photovoltaics and light emitting diodes owing to their superior optoelectrical properties. However, MHP-based devices face the challenge of controlling inevitable defects, such as halide vacancies, which exist in the form of uncoordinated metal sites at the grain boundary or the film surface and hinder the device performance. Phosphine oxide (P=O) based defect passivators have recently been studied for their strong Lewis acid-base coordination effects with uncoordinated metal sites. In this study, we designed and synthesized P=O based organic molecules with various Lewis basicity and passivated PEA-Sn-I perovskite thin films to study the passivation effect along with their optical properties. This work aims to propose a systematic passivator molecular design and contribute to enhancing the performance of MHP-based devices.
