Inorganic-organic double network ionogel for flexible supercapacitor

Gel polymer electrolyte has attracted wider attention because of the combined properties of liquid electrolyte and solid polymer electrolyte. Out of gel electrolyte, ionogels present better promise as they offer better thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stability. Here, inorganic-organic double network ionogel having brittle well developed silica-nanoparticle (Si-NP) network and ductile C-pHEMA network, having around 85 wt.% of EMImBF4 IL is synthesized. This ionogel electrolyte showed electrochemical stability up to 3.0 V, a high ionic conductivity of 12.8 mS cm−1 at 150 °C, and a maximum toughness of 1.8 MJ m−3 at 30 °C. The resulting flexible supercapacitor (fSC) device displayed nearly ideal capacitive features and fast dynamics, facilitated by thermally activated ion transport at elevated temperatures. Moreover, the fSCs were stably operated under extreme mechanical and thermal stresses, providing outstanding cycle stability over 10,000 cycles and high energy density.
