The ability of poly(3,4-ethylentedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) to transport and couple ionic and electronic charges is essential for a variety of devices that require ion-uptake for their operation, such as organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), where electrical conduction of the bulk channel can be modulated by the injection of mobile ions. Due to a low electrical conductivity and processability of pristine PEDOT: PSS, the use of additives is crucial for effective OECT operation. (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GOPS) and 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) are commonly used for enhancing stability against aqueous conditions and spin-coated film uniformity, respectively. However, they can directly affect ion-electron mixed conduction behaviors of PEDOT:PSS, which remains poorly studied. Here, we systematically investigate the effect of each additive by studying their roles in modifying the structural and transport properties of PEDOT:PSS.
