In the field of AEM, the cross-linking system is widely used and enables considerable physicochemical stability including mechanical, dimensional and alkaline stability to the membrane. Herein, we newly synthesized a 3D shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cross-linker having multi-functional (N,N’-Dimethylaminopropyl) groups named DAP. The DAP was incorporated into a flexible and chemically stable quaternized poly[9,9-bis(6-bromohexyl)fluorene]-co-[4,4-bis((4-phenyl)propyl)biphenyl)] (PFPB-QA) to fabricate crosslinked membrane. The physicochemical properties of the crosslinked membrane using the synthesized DAP and the cross-linked membrane with N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine (TMDHA), a cross-linker used in conventional AEM, were compared. The PFPB-QA DAP membranes show not only enhanced mechanical property (both of tensile strength and elongation at break) and alkaline stability but also exhibited high hydroxide ion conductivity compared with the cross-linked with TMDHA used in conventional AEM.
