With the great attention to deformable electrical and electrochemical thin-film devices, ionic liquid-based polymer electrolytes, known as ion gels, are promising soft solid electrolyte candidates for these applications due to their high ionic conductivity, stretchability, non-flammability, and high potential stability window. For the long-term operation of these deformable devices, all active layers of the devices can operate without performance degradation from the external mechanical stress. In this work, we developed a mechanically robust, ionically conductive, and self-healable ion gel that can withstand external mechanical stress and prevent functional degradation from mechanical failures such as scratches and cuts. This ion gel was successfully employed in a stretchable strain sensor and the resulting device exhibited outstanding tolerance to mechanical breakdown.
