H3PO4-catalyzed diacid/diol polycondensation enabled the formation of polyester chains bearing -CH2OP(O)(OH)2 and (-CH2O)2P(O)(OH) groups, which were subsequently treated with M(2-ethylhexanoate)2 (M = nutrient elements essential for plant growth, e.g., Zn, Mg, and Ca) to form ionic aggregates. The prepared ionic aggregates showed significantly faster biodegradabilities than those prepared using the conventional method, where polyester chains were further connected with urethane linkages; both showed comparable rheological and mechanical properties. The prepared polymers may also meet agricultural demands for the controlled release of fertilizers, and we predict that the demonstrated concept of ionic aggregates of macromolecules may be extended to other types of polymers to enhance their biodegradabilities and recyclabilities.
