In the household appliance flame retardant (F/R) market, there is movement of switch from halogen (e.g. bromine) to non-halogen (e.g. phosphorous) type materials. PP composites with phosphorous F/R can be flame retardant in both gas and condensed phase. Therefore, phosphorous F/R emits less smoke and evaluated as eco-friendly materials, compared to bromine-based material that trap polymer radical only in the gas phase and release toxic gases. In this study, we optimized PP non-halogen F/R composites with various melamine derivatives for high UL94 5VA flame retardancy. We have established the criteria to satisfy UL94 5VA flame retardancy by thickness depending on F/R type, content and influence of mineral filler.
