Stable Aqueous Dispersion of Hydrophilically Functionalized Lead Selenide Nanorods (PbSeNRs)

Lead selenide nanorods (PbSeNRs) are a type of quantum dots, which are synthesized semiconductor nanocrystals with a diameter of several nanometers and a length of several tens of nanometers. In general, quantum dots can control their optical properties through size control and are easily dispersed in organic solvents. In addition, because PbSeNRs are consist of Pb and Se atoms, they have potential applications for gamma-ray shielding. To make their practical use more convenient, it is necessary to disperse them in aqueous solution through hydrophilic functionalization. Therefore, we modified the surface of PbSeNRs to be hydrophilic using amphiphilic molecules that have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, resulting in stable dispersion in aqueous solutions. Then, we analyzed the structure and optical properties of the hydrophilic functionalized PbSeNRs using small angle neutron scattering (SANS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and a UV-vis spectrometer.
