A highly self-healable elastic collating material (ShEC) is synthesized, and its self-healing characteristics and optical and mechanical properties are examined in this study. An acrylate-based heterocyclic polyol is synthesized from a mixture of a heterocyclic acrylate and four different kinds of acrylic monomers. A series of ShECs are then prepared by reacting the heterocyclic polyol with a cross-linker containing multiple isocyanate groups. ShECs with heterocyclic moieties show better self-healing performances and mechanical properties than conventional elastic collating materials with no heterocyclic groups. These are ascribed to the unique supramolecular structure resulting from enhanced hydrogen bonding interaction between the urethane groups and the heterocyclic groups in the matrix. A mechanism for improved self-healability and mechanical properties is also proposed in this study.
