A biodegradable and sustainable polymeric nanocomposite (BSPN) is prepared, and its mechanical properties are investigated in this study. A series of BSPNs are prepared by melt blending of poly(butylene adipate terephthalate) (PBAT) as a matrix, modified cellulose fiber (cellulose nanofiber (CNF) or microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)) as a filler, and poly(hexamethylene) diisocyanate (HMDI) as a chain extender. The impact strengths of all the BSPNs are significantly increased compared to pure PBAT. In addition, BSPN reinforced with CNF exhibits superior tensile strength and tearing strength compared to BSPN reinforced with MFC. These are attributed to a unique intermolecular interaction between the PBAT matrix and well-dispersed modified cellulose fibers. A mechanism for improved mechanical properties of BSPN is also proposed in terms of its molecular structure.
