Dual-modification of UiO-66-NH<sub>2</sub> Metal-Organic Frameworks for dehumidifying thin-film nanocomposite membranes

In this study, we demonstrate the molecular engineering of UiO-66-NH2 (UiO) metal-organic frameworks for dehumidifying thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. Our strategy for enhancing H2O-favorable transport channels is to turn the UiO into a hydrophilic one while inducing defective sites. We prepared the parent UiO, the hydrophilic derivatives, the defective derivative, and the dual modified derivatives to investigate the structure-transport property relationship. Carboxylation of UiO is more desirable for H2O/N2 separation than sulfonation owing to more increased hydrophilicity and less reduced surface area. Acetic acid-induced defect engineering increases the surface area of UiO by 38%, contributing to enhanced diffusional channels. The subsequent TFN membrane, containing the defective and carboxylated UiO derivatives exhibited the most excellent H2O/N2 separation performance, suggesting synergistic effects of hydrophilic modification and defect engineering.
