Organic molecules are currently investigated as redox species for aqueous low-cost redox flow batteries (RFBs). The envisioned features of using organic redox species are low cost and increased flexibility with respect to tailoring redox potential and solubility from molecular engineering of side groups on the organic redox-active species. Here, we suggest several benzoquinone derivatives as anolyte candidates for basic pH. We investigate the effect of the number and position of functional groups on the redox properties, solubility, stability, and performance of the full cell. We can pair those benzoquinone-based redox pairs with a catholyte which has sufficiently high redox potential in basic pH, for example, potassium ferrocyanide, to create an aqueous organic RFBs. We discuss the relationship between the electrochemical profiles and the molecular structure of benzoquinone derivatives.
