Since the Industrial Revolution, numerous factories have been built and operated, discharging oily wastewater. Since oily wastewater is one of the causes of environmental pollution, various technologies such as filtration, absorption, and biodegradation have been studied to purify it. We treated the melamine sponge with direct fluorination to increase its oil/water separation ability. Fluorination was performed by adding fluorine in a nitrogen atmosphere. After treatment, the fluorinated melamine sponge was examined through Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). By fluorination, the surface of the fluorinated melamine sponge became hydrophobic compared to the untreated melamine sponge.
