Carboxyl-functionalized graphitic nanoplatelets (CGnPs) were prepared as a new reinforcing filler for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). CGnPs were synthesized using mechanochemical reaction between graphite and CO2 gas. The characteristics of CGnPs are confirmed using a variety of analytic techniques. The preparation of CGnP/PVA nanocomposites used a simple water solution process because PVA is a water soluble polymer. CGnP/PVA nanocompsites were fabricated with various loading ratios of CGnPs (CGnPs content (X) = 1, 2 or 5). Compared to neat PVA, the CGnP/PVA nanocomposites showed significantly enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability. In result, functionalized graphitic nanoplatelets can be applied to various fields as an effective nanofiller for practical nanocomposites applications.
