Decene-functionalized graphitic nanoplatelets as reinforcement for enhancing acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer

Decene-functionalized graphitic nanoplatelets (DGnPs) to enhance acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer was produced via a mechanochemical reaction with solid graphite and 1-decene without additional reaction. DGnP/ABS_X (DGnP loading [X] = 0.5, 1, or 2 wt.%) nanocomposites were prepared by using a solution mixing method that enables uniform dispersion of DGnPs into ABS matrix because of the chemical affinity between DGnPs and ABS. In result, DGnP/ABS nanocomposites showed the excellent mechanical properties (e.g. tensile strength and Young’s modulus) compared with the pure ABS copolymer. Therefore, DGnPs with aliphatic functional groups will be applied as a new polymer additive that enhances the performance of the various polymers.
