Nanostructured polymeric particles are important materials with structure-dependent functionality. However, less attention has been paid on reducing the processing time for preparation of nanostructure particles. Here, we demonstrate rapid preparation time less than 20 min of nanostructured polymeric colloids based on fast self-assembly of bottlebrush random copolymers (BRCPs) confined in evaporative emulsion droplets. BRCPs with polystyrene (PS) and poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) side chains were used as a model system. Upon fast evaporation of emulsion solvent, BRCPS rapidly assembled into onion-like particles with well-ordered concentric lamellae structure, showing that the side-chain polymers dictate the self-assembled morphology. Tunability over the inner nanostructure and domain spacings was achievable via adjustment of volume fraction and the molecular weight of BRCPs.
