Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs), are important class of environmental pollutants that are known to cause several diseases when accumulated in our bodies. Here, we demonstrate fluorinated hydrogel with labile crosslinker that can effectively remove PFAS and show on demand form-switching capability. Simple copolymerization was conducted including fluorophilic monomers, amine-containing monomers, PEGMA, and disulfide-containing crosslinker. Using perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as a model pollutant, removal efficiency was investigated by varying the copolymerization ratio and the degree of quaternization. Removal efficiency over 90% was achievable at optimized copolymerization ratio, rationalizing that removal of PFOA is based on fluorophilic and electrostatic interaction. Additionally, self-healing capability was realized due to the presence of disulfide crosslinker. Finally, disulfide crosslinks were cleaved by introducing DTT to transform bulky hydrogel to micelles.
