Polarimetric organic photodetectors based on highly oriented polymer semiconductor thin films

Polarimetric organic photodetectors (P-OPDs) that show the response depending on the polarization state of the incoming light are promising optoelectronic devices for detecting faint light. Here, we demonstrate that highly oriented polymer semiconductor thin films based on poly([2,6′-4,8-di(5-ethylhexylthienyl)benzo[1,2-b;3,3-b]dithiophene]{3-fluoro-2[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b] thiophenediyl}) (PTB7-Th) as photo-active layers improve anisotropic ratio of self-powered bilayer P-OPDs. The PTB7-Th thin films prepared by mechanical stretching followed by the dry contact transfer printing led to gradually enhanced dichroic ratio, responsivity ratio, and response time of P-OPDs as tensile strain increases. We attribute the enhanced anisotropic ratios to continuous alignment and orientation of polymer chains and associated enhancement of charge carrier mobility under tensile strain. Our results provide a facile strategy for developing next-generation P-OPDs.
