Highly porous supercapacitor electrodes made from fluorinated polyimide and ZIF-8

Fluorinated polyimide has a fluorine functional group, thereby having a relatively larger pore size and specific surface area than polyimide, and has high carbon yield, heat and chemical resistance. In this study, we prepared a porous carbon materials by using fPI with ZIF-8 through a carbonization and used it as an electrode for electric double layer capacitor. This fPI/ZIF-8-derived electrode improves electrochemical performance due to a large specific surface area (1096.65 m2 g-1) and pore size (>2 nm) in a mesoscale. It shows large specific capacitance of 159 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. Moreover, in the aqueous electrolyte (operating potential~1 V), it also provides high power density (148.5 W kg-1) and energy density (0.99 W h kg-1). This electrode also shows an excellent cycle stability of 84% at a current density of 1 A g-1 for at least 5000 charge-discharge cycles.
