Novel polyamide imidazole (PAID) was synthesized as binder for silicon (Si) anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The PAID formed three phases in the order of p-PAID, i-PAID and PAID via amidation, imidization, and imidazolation according to gradually increasing temperature. Among the phases, i-PAID binders imparted the strong interaction with Si particles by their amine and carboxylic acid groups. In addition, the conjugated backbone of i-PAID also interacted with conductive additives. i-PAID-based Si anode suppressed the volume exchange more efficiently than control PI-based Si anode, resulting in the improved cycle stability during 200 cycles. The bi-functional binding effect of i-PAID binder tolerated the huge volume change during the electrochemical reaction.
