Charge Separation and Recombination in Polymer Solar Cells

Polymer solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their potential advantages, including lightweight, thin-film flexibility, color tunability, low-toxicity, and low-cost manufacturing. The power conversion efficiency of PSCs has increased rapidly in recent years and now approaches 19% for single-junction cells and 20% for tandem cells. These recent successes have rekindled interest in this research field. One of the most significant recent advances in PSCs is that latest nonfullerene acceptor based PSCs can generate free charge carriers without the aid of the energy difference between the singlet excited state and charge transfer state. However, the photophysical insights undepinning this remain unclear and a subject of continuing debate. I will talk about the charge separation and recombination mechanism in PSCs studied by transient absorption spectroscopy to unveil photophysics of PSCs.
