Development of Porous Polyethylene Membranes for Lithium-ion Battery Separators Using Side-Chain Crystalline Copolymers

Separators used in lithium-ion batteries must have good ion conductivity, electrolyte resistance, wettability with the electrolyte, and mechanical strength. However, their poor wettability has been an obstacle to achieving high performance. Plasma treatment can be used to modify these membranes, but it is not applicable to thin microporous membranes, because they significantly reduce their mechanical strength which has become increasingly demanding in these days. Recently, we have developed a novel surface modification method for polyethylene (PE) using Side-Chain Crystalline Block Copolymers (SCCBCs). In this study, uniquely structured SCCBC:poly(stearyl acrylate)-block-poly[di(ethylene glycol)ethyl ether acrylate] (PSTA-b-PDEEA) was synthesized and applied for the modification application in porous PE membranes. Just immersing the PE porous membrane in a dilute solution of SCCBC, we found that the hydrophilicity of the PE porous membrane can be improved to the extent that water permeate through it without compromising the mechanical strength of the membrane.
