Processing Characteristics of Poly[3-hydroxybutyrate-<em>co</em>-4-hydroxybutyrate] Films

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)(P(3HB-co-4HB)) films were prepared by melt casting and tubular film blowing. The effect of 4HB content and their sequence in copolymer on the processing characteristics were studied. Physical properties of P(3HB-co-4HB) films were also investigated as a function of 4HB content. Various P(3HB-co-4HB)s were melt-mixed to control the 4HB content and their sequence in the copolymer. It was found that melt processing of P(3HB-co-4HB) having high 4HB content was very limited due to the inherently low melt strength. An increase in 4HB content by mixing P(3HB-co-4HB) with high 4HB content helped to increase the melt strength but decrease in mechanical properties due to the flexibility of the 4HB chain, which resulted in a lowering of melt viscosity.
