Capsule-based Customizable Colorimetric Temperature Monitoring Sensor for Easy Management of Cold Chain Breach

Despite recent advancements, the existing temperature monitoring technologies for cold chain management lack flexibility toward customized cold chain management for a variety of products with different temperatures required. In this study, we present a novel colorimetric temperature monitoring system based on capsules that has a precise and easily tunable temperature range. The rapid fabrication of monodisperse microcapsules with an interstitial phase-change oil (PCO) layer is achieved via triple emulsion-based microfluidic technology. A drastic change in color caused by the PCO layer's liquid-to-solid phase transition below its freezing point allows for highly sensitive visual monitoring that is also user-friendly. The monitorable temperature range can be further widened in a precisely controlled manner by simply tuning the composition of the PCO layer. The suggested simple technique can be easily formulated to detect both temperature rise in a frozen environment and freeze detection, as well as multiple temperature monitoring.
