High refractive polymers have been steadily developed for advanced optical materials. In particular, phosphorus atoms with high polarizability not only improve the refractive index of polymer, but also exhibit good transmittance in the visible light region. This study is about the synthesis and characterization of new polyphosphonate polymers containing phosphine sulfide and phosphine selenide group. The polyphosphonate polymers containing highly polarizable groups exhibited a refractive index greater than 1.66 and transmittance greater than 90 % in the visible light region. In particular, polyphosphonate containing selenium in the main chain achieved high refractive index (1.67) and low birefringence (0.0027) due to the heavy atom effect of selenium.
