Photoreactive polymers have become a major of interest in contemporary synthetic chemistry due to their capability of undergoing reactions characterized by non-invasive spatiotemporal control and high selectivity. Herein, we report the formation of large compound micelles(LCMs) through visible light induced decarbonylation of BCPs bearing bridged 1,2-diketone moieties. Irradiation of the n to π* absorption band of the photoreactive block using a blue LED (455 nm) led to a rapid and quantitative decarbonylation at the diketone bridge, yielding the corresponding anthracene derivative. The solubility change is attributed to the change in the free volume of the polymer and only gaseous byproducts are generated. Decarbonylation of diketone-bearing BCPs led to micelle-to-LCM transition in solution, which could be monitored through SEM imaging. The anthracene derivative can further undergo reversible dimerization by UV light, ensuring additional control over the nanostructure and stability.
