MXenes, emerging 2-dimensional materials family represented by Ti3C2Tx, have mostly been synthesized from parent MAX phases by selectively removing A elements, typically using aqueous HF etchant. During the etching process, nucleophilic F- ions or water molecules immediately bind onto the freshly opened metal atoms on the surface of MXenes. Indeed, the surface terminal groups of MXenes are inevitably determined to be -F, -OH, or -O- from the synthesis using aqueous HF. In this presentation, we will introduce our approaches towards the controlled surface terminal groups of MXenes by modifying the etchants; dominant F-termination on MXenes was observed in anhydrous etchant, and F-termination could be completely elminated by halogen-free synthesis. Therefore, researchers in this field now have synthetic tools to choose the surface properties of MXenes, depending on the properties on-demand, such as layer-to-layer interactions, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, etc.
