In this research, we report novel skin electrodes based on grid-type conducting polymer microfiber mesh and ion gel composites. The grid-type conducting polymer microfiber mesh electrodes permit high ion permeability and optical transparency compared to film-type electrodes, while ion gel enables easy attachment to human skin with moderate mechanical durability. The resultant grid-type mesh electrodes exhibit relatively low impedance similar to commercial gel electrodes, but they appear almost invisible due to microfiber’s small diameter and low density. The fabricated microfiber mesh-based skin electrodes may contribute to high-fidelity bio-signal detection in electromyography or electrocardiogram by decent signal-to-noise ratios similar to those of commercial gel electrodes.
