Enhancing the performance of PEO-basis polymer electrolyte using garnet-type LLZO for lithium metal batteries

Due to the stability problems and low energy density of liquid electrolytes, the need for the development of next-generation batteries is significant. The lithium metal battery is one of the promising alternatives, but lithium metal has the problem such as lithium dendrite formation and reactivity with organic electrolytes. In this study, we studied the ethylene oxide-based polymer and garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) hybrid electrolyte (PGE). The solid-state electrolyte shows high lithium metal stability and ability to suppress lithium dendrite growth with high ionic conductivity (1.03 x 10-4 S cm-1 at 50 ℃), and high voltage stability (5.5 V vs Li/Li+). A symmetric cell including Li/PGE/Li shows the high stability to lithium metal and enhancement of inhibiting the growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, the PGE provides good electrochemical performance such as high voltage stability, and cycle stability, so it can be used in lithium metal batteries.
