The boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are an inorganic analog of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and have attracted attention because they have excellent properties such as high mechanical strength and chemical inertness. BNNTs are usually synthesized in the form of aggregates bound by van der Waals forces and exhibit low dispersion properties in most solvents, limiting their effective applications. In this study, poly amic acid salt-BNNTs (PAAS-BNNTs) were prepared by non-covalently functionalizing water-soluble PAAS with improved dispersion stability in organic solvents, and high compatibility with polyimide (PI) nanocomposites. We show that BNNTs functionalized with PAAS have enhanced mechanical properties that are influenced by various loadings of PAAS-BNNT/PI films through in situ polymerization. Compared to the pure PI film, the tensile strength and tensile modulus increased by about 20% and 37%, respectively.
