The synthetic leather used in real life is mainly treated with polyurethane (PU) and is used in diverse applications due to excellent physical properties and simple manufacturing process. However, it is vulnerable to bacterial infections and has a high risk of fire as it is widely used. Therefore, in this study, the surface of synthetic PU leather was modified through a dip-coating method using phosphate ester and antibacterial agents. The PU-based synthetic leather achieves preventing infection from microbial contaminants such as bacteria and fungi, and flame retardant properties. As a result, antibacterial tests using Escherichia coli and S. epidermidis shows antibacterial properties of more than 90%. The thermal stability and flame retardancy are confirmed through thermogravimetric analysis and flame retardant tests. The coatings introduced in this study can be useful in textile, transportation, and electronics industries by preventing bacterial contamination and existing flame retardants.
